The iPhone 4 unlocked GSM is now on sale for $649 (16GB), T-Mobile, of course, does allow you to get a plan with only talk and text without a contract and use it with a smartphone without a data plan, even with their 3G network. This is really not new.  If you purchased the iPhone at full retail from Apple or AT&T, you could get the unlock code from the carrier, or completed so many months of service before AT&T would give you the unlock code.

My friend is an AT&T employee, the cost for buying a subsidized model is more complicated than just $199 + $325. You will also be responsible for the $36 activation fee and the first month of service, as the account can only be cancelled within the first 30 days with the return of equipment. So, minimum, 199+325+36+39.99 (voice)+15(data) = 614.99 + taxes. You do come out a little ahead.

I’m thinking this will be a precursor to the next iPhone being a true "world" device. This is still the best phone I have ever had. I love the interface, the app options, the camera and having all my email accounts and being able to sync so easily to my work callendar. I would recommend this phone but don’t get a used one because you won’t get free apple care.
